AWE at Night - September 2025

Be sure to join us for this month’s AWE at Night on September 18! AWE is open for an evening filled with art activities, community discussions, guided tours, and great vibes.

Art Activity: DIY LED Necklaces with Halkforge

4pm – 8:30pm, 2nd floor, Education Studio

Join Hackforge for a hands-on workshop where creativity meets electronics! Learn the basics of simple circuits by connecting LEDs, batteries, and conductive materials to design a glowing necklace. Decorate your wooden pendant with markers and stickers, then light up the night with your one-of-a-kind creation! No experience needed, everyone is welcome. Recommended for ages 12+ to complete independently, or bring the whole family and work together!

Best-known for his striking portraits, Cuevas reimagined the human figure to illuminate deeper truths about identity, society, and the human experience. This guided tour celebrates his creativity, independence, and lasting impact.

Performance: Muscle Panic by Hazel Meyer

6pm – 7pm, 2nd floor galleries 

Muscle Panic is a high-energy performance on an 11-foot scaffold that blends sport, queerness, and movement to reimagine competition, gender, and play. Through drills, gestures, and improvisations, performers transform athletic expression into a celebration of spirit, collaboration, and new forms of belonging.

Community Conversation: Mexican Gastronomy - A Journey In Time For Your Senses

6pm – 6:30pm, 3rd floor

Mexican gastronomy, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a rich mosaic shaped by the country’s cultural diversity and traditions. In this program, Consul Rodrigo Báez will provide cultural context, while Chef Ricardo Muñoz highlights key ingredients and regional flavors, and Sonia Cortes shares her experience learning traditional recipes in rural Michoacán.

“EL GRITO” OF INDEPENDENCE CEREMONY

6:30pm – 8pm, 3rd floor

“El Grito” is a reenactment of Mexico’s 1810 call for independence, marked by the ringing of a bell and shouts of “¡Viva México!”—a tradition led in Mexico City by the president and celebrated worldwide by Mexican communities. On September 18, 2025, Consul Rodrigo Báez will lead this civic ceremony at Art Windsor-Essex, followed by Mexico’s National Anthem and a cultural show.

  • 6:30pm – 6:50pm: Mexican Independence Day remarks by the consulate of Mexico
  • 6:50pm – 6:55pm: Grito de Dolores re-enactment
  • 6:55pm – 7:00pm: Mexican National Anthem

Performance: Román de La Cruz

Born in the town of Suchiapa, Chiapas, Mexico, Román discovered a passion for singing at the age of 15 and began developing his talent through self-taught practice. By age 18, he was already performing live, gaining experience and recognition as a vocalist of traditional Mexican regional music.

In 2020, he emigrated to Canada as an agricultural worker. During his free time, he would sing to entertain fellow workers, quickly capturing the interest and admiration of those around them. This led to performances at local restaurants, where his music was warmly embraced by the community. Since then, Román has continued to bring the vibrant sound of regional Mexican music to new audiences, sharing his culture and voice on different stages in Canada.

Flashlight Tour: Night Animals

Grab your flashlight and join us for an after-hours nature walk. Discover the animals, plants, and landscapes woven into the intricate tapestries of artist Mary Anne Barkhouse. Together, we’ll explore how her artwork connects art and nature in meaningful ways, shining a light on the plants and animals that surround us.
