Curated by T. Bujold-Abu, TD Curatorial Fellow (2025-2026), this exhibition, pulled from the Art Windsor-Essex Collection, seeks to locate and foreground Black within the institution; examining absence through presence. By interrogating Blackness as a medium, alike to the title Ink, Charcoal, & Jet – the colour Black is positioned as a central character: an active, contributing voice, speaking from the collection.
Breaking the Surface is an emergent series of reflections – interrogating the infrastructure, tourism, longing, and visual construction of paradise. Artist Racquel Rowe, a Bajan artist currently residing in Canada, begins her process with underwater investigations; tracing the beaches of Barbados and dwelling just below the surface – where the land, sea, and sky blur into abstraction.

In Racquel Rowe’s exhibition, we can see and notice the different shapes created by moving water, so cool, right? Join us in the studio to create marble print postcards! We’ll try and mimic those shapes by marbling paper to look like water – don’t be afraid to get messy and explore.

Racquel Rowe is a Barbados-born interdisciplinary artist based in Canada whose work explores Caribbean visual culture, memory, migration, and diasporic identity through video, performance, and installation. Her practice has been featured in exhibitions across Canada and supported by major arts grants, with recent solo shows including The Centre of the World Was the Beach (2025) and Saltwater Cures All (2024).
Talysha Bujold-Abu is a Ghanaian and French-Canadian illustrator, educator, and arts administrator based in Windsor, Ontario. Her work blends play and critical inquiry, using accessible visual storytelling to explore belonging, visibility, and connections between research, creation, and community.
