Community Display: Memengwaa / Butterflies
September 3, 2026 - November 1, 2026
WFCU Eco-Lounge, 3rd floor
Art Windsor-Essex partnered with the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board on a butterfly display featuring artworks created by students in Windsor-Essex.
Butterflies, or memengwaa in Ojibwe, symbolize transformation, growth, and resilience. In this student art exhibition, they represent the ongoing journey of reconciliation, a process of learning, reflection, understanding, and positive change.
Through their artwork, students explore how reconciliation can help us build stronger relationships, honour Indigenous voices and experiences, and create a future grounded in respect, empathy, and connection.
The “beads,” or pixels, that form the butterflies were individually coloured by WECDSB students, illustrating how many unique voices and contributions can come together in the shared journey toward reconciliation.
Organized by the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, in consultation with Carrie Ann Peters (Caldwell First Nation).
This display was inspired by artist Vanessa Dion Fletcher and her artwork, Kaakaapushak Butterflies.
983 butterflies created by WECDSB students.
Installed by Sophie Hinch and Paris Poulin with support from Sarah Al Badri.
