Our hands-on guided tours and studio workshops are an awe-some way to enrich your students’ experience of the Gallery as they have fun while learning and meeting curriculum goals.
Field trips to the gallery are offered Monday-Wednesday between 10am-2pm in French or English, depending on availability. Book at least 2 weeks in advance to secure your preferred dates and times.

Explore current exhibitions with an AWE educator. Students will participate in a flashlight scavenger hunt while learning about the artists and their artistic practice. They will also learn how to look at, and understand a work of art. In the studio, students will create a work of art inspired by what they learned in the gallery. Option 1: Christian Chapman: Run to the Hills!

Christian Chapman is an Anishinaabe artist from Fort William First Nation. In “Run to the Hills!” Chapman showcases storytelling by blending traditional oral stories with his own unique style using painting and mixed media. His artwork captures both the humour in everyday life and the deeper political themes of his culture.

Option 2: Sameer Farooq: The Fairest Order in the World

Sameer Farooq is a Canadian artist with roots in Pakistan and Uganda. His work explores how museums collect and share stories and objects, while helping people discover stories that have often been forgotten or hidden.

During this interactive tour, students will get a behind-the-scenes look at what happens in an art gallery. They will participate in a flashlight scavenger hunt through current exhibitions to find hidden artworks. In the studio, students will build their own miniature, three-dimensional art gallery, complete with tiny works of art including paintings and sculptures.

Inspired by AWE’s current exhibitions, students will fill their own miniature passports, which they’ll use to explore the gallery and collect badges. In the studio, they will participate in “Ready, Set, Draw!”, a fast-paced drawing exercise, and collaborate on a group activity called “Traffic Jam” to create a mixed-media map mural. This program encourages creativity, discovery, and exploration through playful activities and laughter. Plus, you’ll get to take your mural back to school to display!
AWE in the Classroom harnesses the power of art to create unique educational offerings in a diverse range of curriculum areas. AWE in the classroom programs combine the current Ontario curriculum with exhibitions and artworks from AWE’s collection. Programs are packaged with teachers in mind and come with creative activities for the classroom, video content, templates, presentations and more.

Looking for art-based lesson plans to integrate into your course outline? AWE’s got you covered with comprehensive lessons with local ties to help students make connections to their surroundings. Art Windsor-Essex invites high school students to an immersive, 2-hour SHSM program designed to bring them behind-the-scenes of a public art gallery. Through this hands-on learning experience, students will gain insight into the inner workings of a public art gallery, engage directly with AWE staff, and develop new skills in printmaking. Reflect on the experience with a self-assessment and short quiz and receive a certificate recognizing your participation!
