The Seniors Council

The Seniors Council is a collective of creative individuals committed to lifelong learning.

The Seniors Council is a collective of creative individuals committed to lifelong learning. This collective is not your average council. Members play an active role in shaping the program, helping decide what skills they’d like to learn and what activities they’d like to participate in.

From painting with natural pigments to yoga, printmaking, acrylic landscapes, and candle-making, this innovative program is by seniors, for seniors.

The Seniors Council is all about skill-building, fostering meaningful conversations, and breaking down the walls of social isolation. Together, we’re on a mission to enrich the lives of local seniors by providing intellectually and creatively engaging activities. It’s not just about creating art; it’s about creating connections that span generations and bring the community closer together.

The Seniors Council’s purpose aligns with AWE’s broader mission — to harness the power of art to open minds and hearts to new ideas, perspectives and ways of thinking that inspire people to grow emotionally and intellectually. Together, they’re breaking barriers, inspiring fresh perspectives, and creating an atmosphere where everyone can enjoy and create art.

Together, the Seniors Council is proving that art is more than something we make, it is something that brings people together.

Create & Connect

Through hands-on workshops, Seniors Council members explore a variety of creative techniques, artistic practices, and ideas in a welcoming and social environment.

From basket weaving and ceramics to painting, chair yoga, printmaking, Tai Chi, and embroidery, these sessions offer opportunities to try something new, share experiences, and connect with others. Led by artists and community members, workshops encourage creativity, lifelong learning, and meaningful connections.

Exploring Together

Tours give council members a chance to experience art, culture, and history in new ways, both inside and outside the gallery. From exhibition tours led by artists and curators to first looks and behind-the-scenes experiences, these outings spark curiosity, conversation, and connection. Tours often inspire new ideas and creative projects in our Education Studio.

Sharing Their Stories

Seniors Council members have opportunities to share their creativity through community art displays that celebrate their creative accomplishments, highlight their experiences and perspectives, and give them a chance to share their work with others.
