Art in the Park! with Catherine Hois

Think of your favourite sport. It could be any sport, like soccer, volleyball, bowling, golf, hockey, running, dance… anything! What do you like about this sport? How does it make you feel when you are doing this activity?
Let’s create artwork inspired by your favourite sport!
First, let’s draw, or paint symbols that represent this sport to us. Think about the things you see when you’re doing this sport. Is there special sports equipment? A uniform? Certain foods? Draw some of these symbols, or paint them on a piece of paper. Space them out with about 1 inch between each symbol.
About the Artist: Catherine Hois
Catherine Hois is a visual artist from Toronto, Canada. She completed her BFA, BED, and MFA at York University. She has shown her work in Toronto, and Windsor Ontario, and is currently working on her second Canada Council for the Arts funded project. Her current work focuses on creating a confrontational atmosphere through exposure of the typically private and unspoken: stigmatized body types, and issues with the normalization of extreme body management. Her work is inspired by her own recovery from an eating disorder and body dysmorphia, and using art making as a way to shed light on her experiences. Her process involves reflecting on her evolving relationship with her body, and connecting her experiences with issues of unhealthy societal body ideals. Catherine works with a variety of mediums, including soft sculpture, painting, drawing, and stop-motion animation.
