Join Abel González Fernández, Associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), as he discusses Charles McGee’s work and legacy. McGee’s Tunnel to Detroit (1965) is featured in the exhibition The Once and Future City co-curated by Shanthi Senthe and Anneke Smit (Windsor Law’s Centre for Cities) and Emily McKibbon (AWE). Charles McGee was an influential artist in the Detroit art scene known for his use of vibrant colors and bold geometric shapes.
Abel González Fernández
Abel González Fernández (Havana, 1991) is a writer and curator focusing on Mid-century art and design and global contemporary art practices. González Fernández is the Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). At MOCAD, González Fernández is working on an exhibition about the legacy of Gallery 7, founded by Charles McGee in 1969 to foster and promote Black artists in the city of Detroit. Previously to MOCAD, he graduated from the Center for Curatorial Studies (CCS), Bard College, in 2023, and has curated exhibitions in Havana, Berlin, Detroit, Tokyo, and New York. He is one of the contributing writers and advisors for “Latin American Artist: From 1785 to Now,” published by Phaidon Press in 2023.
