AWE at Night - June 2025

In this June edition of AWE at Night, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. AWE will be open for an evening filled with art activities, community discussions, guided tours, and great vibes.

Photography and videography will be present throughout the event. By entering this event site you agree to be filmed or photographed which may be used for marketing or promotional purposes.

 

Art Activity: Paint pARTy with Moses Lunham and the Teen Arts Council

 5pm – 8:30pm, 2nd floor, Education Studio 

Join us in the studio with artist Moses Lunham, who will be leading a collaborative acrylic painting session alongside members of AWE’s Teen Arts Council. We’ll provide the materials, you bring the creativity.

Moses Lunham is an Ojibway artist from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation and a member of the Fish Clan.

Hoop Dance Demonstration: Melissa Greenbird 

6pm – 6:30pm, 2nd floor galleries 

Head to the second floor for a special dance performance by Melissa Greenbird! Melissa Greenbird is a hoop dancer from Walpole Island who recently attended the World Hoop Dance Championships in Arizona, USA.

Community Conversation: Nation to Nation: Legal Promises and Personal Realities for First Nations

In the June edition of AWE at Night, we recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day, celebrating the rich cultures, traditions, languages, and knowledge systems. From art and music to governance and environmental stewardship, Indigenous communities have shaped—and continue to shape—Canada in profound ways.

Artist Talk: Krystal Bigsky

7pm – 7:30pm, 2nd floor galleries 

“My Art piece is Live at the Art Windsor Essex. Titled “He has Grey Eyes” -a memory piece for my late brother Gregory Wayne who played hockey at an Indian boarding school in Southern Saskatchewan. Beaded sweetgrass on the blade of a hockey stick. This is probably my most favorite part of the Hockey Stick.” – Krystal Bigsky

Krystal Bigsky is a Visual Arts student at the University of Windsor from Touchwood Agency, Treaty 4 Territory in Southern Saskatchewan.

Artist and Curator Tour: Mary Anne Barkhouse with Emily McKibbon

7:30pm – 8:pm, 3rd floor galleries 

Celebrate the opening of Mary Anne Barkhouse’s new exhibition at AWE. Be among the first to experience her latest work and explore themes of ecology, history, and Indigenous perspectives through contemporary art.

Mary Anne Barkhouse was born in Vancouver, British Columbia but has strong ties to both coasts as her mother is from the Nimpkish band, Kwakiutl First Nation of Alert Bay, BC and her father is of German and British descent from Nova Scotia.
