Art Activity: Riverscapes⎮  5pm – 8:30pm, 2nd floor, Education Studio

Join us for the opening of the Detroit River Project and Sauvé Art Foundation in the studio! Draw inspiration from its rich history, the vibrant community today, and the vision for its preservation, while creating your own riverscape.

Community Display: The Detroit River Project 5:30pm – 6pm, 2nd floor galleries

Kimberly Simmons, the Detroit River Project, the Sauvé Art Foundation, and Art Windsor-Essex are partnering to use art to inspire community engagement and preserve the history of the Detroit River. As part of an international sculpture exhibit, children from Southwest Detroit and Windsor created canvases inspired by the “Man in the City” project, showcased at Art Windsor-Essex. This initiative empowers young artists to connect with cultural history and supports efforts to achieve UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the Detroit River.

Community Display: Community Living Windsor 6pm – 6:30pm, 3rd floor galleries, WFCU Eco Lounge

Over the past eight weeks at AWE, talented artists from Community Living Windsor have been gathering in the studio to get creative, try new things, and connect with each other. Each week, they explored different mediums — from watercolour paintings and pastel drawings to wire and clay sculptures — diving into fresh projects and building new skills along the way. More than just making art, these workshops were about making friends, taking creative risks, and celebrating everyone’s unique talents.

Now, we’re thrilled to share their incredible work with you! Come see what they’ve created and join us in celebrating their creativity, growth, and achievements. This program is supported by the Solcz Family Foundation.

  • 6pm: Opening remarks and acknowledgments
  • 6:15pm: Artist talks
  • 6:20pm: Group photos and celebration

Community Conversation: Access, Opportunity, and Employment⎮  6:30pm – 7pm, 3rd floor galleries

Access to employment is a critical issue for adults with intellectual disabilities in Windsor-Essex. In this community conversation, we’ll explore the challenges many face when seeking work, the barriers that hinder accessibility, and how we can create more inclusive opportunities. Together, we’ll discuss practical solutions and the role we can all play in building a more inclusive and equitable workforce for everyone. Join us for an open dialogue on how we can make employment opportunities accessible for all!

Community Living Month is a province-wide annual awareness campaign to recognize the accomplishments of the Community Living movement. This May 2025, join Community Living Windsor as they show why authentic inclusion matters for people who have an intellectual disability and their families!

Moderator and Speakers TBA soon!

Artist Talk: Krystal Bigsky ⎮  7pm – 7:30pm, 2nd floor galleries

Join artist Krystal Bigsky and one of the co-curator of SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS, Julie Rae Tucker for an artist talk! Krystal is a Plains Cree and Saulteaux visual artist who uses floral, geometric, and contemporary designs to explore her ancestry and identity. Her work Grey Eyes celebrates her brother, a hockey player, with beadwork on the fringes symbolizing the Northern Lights, all crafted from brain-tanned moosehide supplied by the artist’s mother. This piece, which honors her family traditions of hockey and beadwork, was commissioned by AWE and will become part of the permanent collection.

With over thirty years of experience in beadwork, Krystal’s work blends various mediums and has been featured in solo exhibitions, including Sustain the Roots at Dry Goods Gallery.
