September 30th marks Orange Shirt Day – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story, Orange Shirt Day commemorates the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.
AWE invites seniors to join a collaborative art project by WECDSB students, titled Bezhig Miigwan / One Feather. Led by facilitator Sandra Ellis, participants will paint watercolour feathers that will become part of a collective display.
The theme of the display is bezhig miigwan, meaning “one feather”, that symbolizes each survivor, each child lost and denotes that we are all connected and it is vital to work together to achieve reconciliation. It honours the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrates resilience and affirms a commitment that every child matters. The feather represent our collective commitment to working together to achieve truth and reconciliation.
