Art Windsor-Essex respectfully acknowledges that we are located on Anishinaabe Territory – the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations, comprised of the Ojibway, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. Today the Anishinaabe of the Three Fires Confederacy are represented by Bkejwanong. We want to state our respect for the ancestral and ongoing authority of Walpole Island First Nation over its Territory.

This week, you will create your own neon sign using bent wires, pipe cleaners and colourful yarn. The artist created a word bank with words related to resilience, remembrance, family, hope, and blessings. You will twist and manipulate your wire into the shape of their chosen word, and proceed to spiral wrap the yarn and super-glue it onto the wire. The result is a brightly-lit, inspiring text to remind you of your inner power.
This works inspired by Jude Abu Zanieh’s work, بتهون (حلم بيافا) Bit-hoon (this too shall pass//dreaming of Jaffa), 2022, from AWE’s permanent collection.
Meet the Artist: Batoolio
Batool “Batoolio” Yahya is a self-taught Palestinian-Canadian artist who identifies with abstract expressionist, and Art Brut movements. She is known for her fantastical-like visual journeys sometimes described as confusing to the viewer. She is an activist who believes art is a necessary integration for vitality in community, and works in the community to uplift artists facing boundaries to success through her 2023/2024 ACHF-grant funded project, HeArt from the Streets (formerly “Colors of Resilience”).
