Art Windsor-Essex respectfully acknowledges that we are located on Anishinaabe Territory – the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations, comprised of the Ojibway, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. Today the Anishinaabe of the Three Fires Confederacy are represented by Bkejwanong. We want to state our respect for the ancestral and ongoing authority of Walpole Island First Nation over its Territory.

The Group of Seven : Not Formed in a Day
October 25, 2022 - January 28, 2023
Second Floor
Group of Seven: Not Formed in a Day was originally a pop-up at River Bookshop’s Hole in the Wall event space. We are pleased to be able to present the show in our fully accessible gallery space.
“The place that the Group of Seven occupies in the story of Canadian art was born from conversations. These conversations started first between the artists, as they worked to define a new art for Canada. The conversations continue today as other artists, curators, writers, thinkers, and makers consider their work from different perspectives.”
–Group of Seven: Not Formed in a Day, exhibition text by Jennifer Matotek and Nadja Pelkey
Prints by Group of Seven members in AWE’s permanent collection are hung together with paintings and drawings loaned by a private collector. These works highlight the ways that the Group of Seven built their legacy. The group made print editions and commercial works as well as their famed paintings.
This show invites us to reflect on how art can shape our view of the places we live.
