Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program

The Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program (IYMP) welcomes applications from indigenous youth (aged 15-29) to receive mentorship from an indigenous arts professional.

AWE is looking for a creative, motivated, and curious person. No prior art gallery experience is necessary. One youth will be selected to assist AWE staff with the organization and curation of the upcoming exhibition, Waawiyaataanong Forever.

Waawiyaataanong Forever is a photography project opening in 2024 that focuses on the representation of women and two-spirit folks and their relations in our region. This Indigenous-led project was developed in partnership with AWE by a committee of community members.

Working in a creative environment can open doors to exciting opportunities and career paths in fields in and beyond the cultural sector. This program will provide the mentee with invaluable opportunities to learn from industry professionals and develop new skills, in support of their future career. 

 

  • Eligibility: Open to Indigenous youth aged 15-29 years old in Windsor-Essex. 
  • To Apply: To apply, please fill out the application form. You will be asked to submit a resume and one work or volunteer reference. For application assistance, please contact Sophie Hinch at shinch@artwindsoressex.ca. Only applicants selected for interviews will be contacted. 
  • Schedule: This program will take place between November 2023 and June 2024. The mentor and mentee will meet bi-weekly, online and in-person, for 1-hour meetings. In-person meetings will take place from mid-January to February 15, 2024 at Art Windsor-Essex.
  • Payment: After successfully completing the program, the mentee will receive a $1500 honorarium for their contributions.

About the Artist Mentor: Julie Rae Tucker 

Julie Rae Tucker is a lunaape person from the Munsee-Delaware First Nation and of settler descent. She is the Head of Programs and Projects at Art Windsor Essex. Her curatorial projects include Grey Matter: Your Brain on Art, Daphne Odjig: Our Mothers, Nii Ndaahlohke among others.
