Call for Participants: Healing & Wellness through Indigenous Wear & Fashion

In partnership with Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC), AWE is hosting a 3-day fashion and design workshop for Indigenous youth in Windsor-Essex.

Over three days, participants will be guided by creative mentors from the community to create head-to-toe looks that celebrates their cultural and personal identity. From ribbon skirts and shorts to accessories, we will put a contemporary twist on traditional garments.

This project, in partnership with AWE and SOAHAC, was co-developed by Indigenous community members. This is an Indigenous-led project.

This project is open to First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth aged under 30 years old. Participants will receive an honorariums. Each participant will create a head-to-toe look that reimagine traditional garments and regalia. The designs will be presented during a Fashion Show at AWE on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

No previous experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Participants will attend all 3 workshops and must demonstrate a commitment and desire to learn! Spaces are limited; pre-registration is required.

Meet the Facilitator: Krystal Bigsky

Krystal Bigsky is a third-year current Visual Arts student at the University of Windsor from Touchwood Agency, Treaty 4 Territory in Southern Saskatchewan. Over the last few years, she has created art through beadwork and textile work. Krystal is a mother and professional powwow dancer, who travels across the Canada and the United States of America. Recently, Krystal has been combining elements of sculpture, textile, time base, photography and collage with her beadwork. Krystal has a deep fascination with landscapes and natural elements and incorporates them into her work.
