Art Windsor-Essex respectfully acknowledges that we are located on Anishinaabe Territory – the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations, comprised of the Ojibway, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. Today the Anishinaabe of the Three Fires Confederacy are represented by Bkejwanong. We want to state our respect for the ancestral and ongoing authority of Walpole Island First Nation over its Territory.

Art for Newcomers: 2025 Workshops
Working in partnership with the Multicultural Council of Windsor Essex, AWE presents Art for Newcomers, a series of art workshops for newcomers in Windsor-Essex.

About the Project
Working in partnership with the Multicultural Council of Windsor Essex, AWE will deliver an art for newcomers’ program to two groups of newcomers to the Windsor-Essex area twice a year.
Each cohort will take place over four months, with one art lesson a month. The program is led by an instructor who has lived experience of being new to Canada themselves.
The goal of the program is to create a safe space where participants can connect with others with similar lived experiences, discover artistic skills to support their mental health, and practice language in a safe and supportive environment.
Upcoming Workshops

Crochet for Beginners
Time and Date: Wednesday, April 23, 3pm-5pm
Participants will learn basic stitches to make a chain. The length will be suitable for a toddler-sized scarf which they will be able to continue and finish at home if needed. Once they learn this technique, they can simply make it larger for an adult. Participants who have experience with crochet will be shown more difficult stitches for a fancier chain.

Macrame Wall Hangings
Time and Date: Wednesday, April 30, 3pm-5pm
Participants will learn the basics of macramé knotting techniques to create a decorative wall hanging. They will start by attaching cords to a wooden dowel and practicing basic knots such as the Lark’s Head, Square Knot, and Double Half Hitch Knot. They will arrange these knots into a pattern to create a boho-style hanging piece. To personalize their project, they can add wooden beads, dip-dye for color variation, or create a fringed effect at the bottom.

Sunflower Granny Squares
Time and Date: Wednesday, May 14, 3pm-5pm
They will each make 4 sunflower granny squares with the same pattern, but different colour arrangement. Participants will have some choice in colour, but they will be complementary. Then, they will stitch the four squares together to create a larger display piece. For those participants who work slower, they can just make and attach 2 squares. They will still be learning the same basic process. This technique can be made larger to make blankets, scarves, even clothing.

Vision Board Shadow Boxes
Time and Date: Wednesday, May 21, 3pm-5pm
Participants will design and assemble a 3D collage inside a shadow box using layers of paper, dried flowers, photos, or small objects. The artwork will have depth and dimension, making it perfect for personalized home décor or gifts.
They will arrange elements creatively, securing them with glue dots or double-sided tape instead of liquid glue to keep the process clean. The final piece can be displayed on a shelf or hung on a wall.

Crochet Circles
Time and Date: Wednesday, June 11, 3pm-5pm
Learn how to make a circle using crochet! They will start by making a circle using simple stitches. The more advanced participants who are able to make a bigger circle can be shown how to make the border. Participants can choose what colour they’d like to use for the piece.
Group Display
This August, we’re wrapping up the program with a collaborative display! Artwork made during the workshops will be showcased at the Arts Council Windsor & Region. Participants will get to be part of the entire process —helping set up the show, gallery-sitting, and volunteering throughout the summer.
Stay tuned—dates and details coming soon!
